June 12th

8:00 PM - 10:00 PM

Florence Little Theater

(843) 662-8121.

Take One: American television viewers turn on their sets

to watch American Idol, Dancing With the Stars, the Grammys,

American Music Awards, Ellen DeGeneres, and various other

popular TV icons. Look at the band, and you can randomly find

Chris and/or Adrienne Woods with their violin and/or cello

backing up performers whose names are splashed across the Florence Morning News, not to mention the world press. Go to the Jonas Brothers’ new 3D movie – and you will find Adrienne Woods flitting across the screen. Fly to Macau off the coast of China in May, and Chris Woods will be performing at the Arts Festival with a giant Earth Harp.

How did these accomplished Florentine musicians who grew up with the classical background of parents Sherry and Benjamin Woods break into the LA scene? Ask them, not their parents. Just sit back and enjoy their creative forays into rap and songwriting as well as classical pieces that are the backbone of their music making.

Take Two: Benjamin and Sherry Woods are driving around potholes the size of swimming pools in rural Costa Rica with a huge volcano in sight on the way to the artist colony where Sherry writes her Chambers for Duke University’s Ciompi String Quartet’s performance at the Sight and Sounds concert series of the North Carolina Museum of Art. Or fast forward to Bangkok, Thailand where (on their first night out) Sherry and her guide book map unwittingly lead them directly into a political rally against the government with armed police eyeing them suspiciously. This was just a prelude to their performance of Sherry’s Ruins for viola and piano chosen for the Composers’ Concert at the College Music Society’s International Conference amidst the ruins of ancient statues and wats. Or picture the pubs and churches of Ireland where Sherry soaks up the music to transplant a bit of Celtic sound back to the heart of Florence. Fast forward again, and listen to Of Fire Born written for this American Red Cross benefit concert.

Take Three:  Soon-to-be retired distinguished Professor Benjamin Woods of Francis Marion University wonders how as a homebody he ended up with the troupe of adventurous musicians that are his family. During the school year, he and Sherry work long hours teaching and performing music in the Florence community.

Take Four: You are sitting in the Florence Little Theater on June 12, 2009 to hear the Woods Family and Friends Rap to Ravel concert. You hear Benjamin’s classical Ravel for the piano, Vivaldi’s Summer Concerto from the Four Seasons for violin (Chris) and orchestra, a new work by Sherry featuring LA soprano Lauren Smith, the sultry voice and cello of Adrienne Woods, plus other Florence musicians joining together to make music and raise money for the American Red Cross.

All music is in honor of and for the benefit of the Pee Dee Chapter of the American Red Cross, an organization of compassionate people who dedicate their lives and service to those affected by the disasters that overturn the lives of those near and far. Please give generously and count yourself as a friend to this great organization.

Proudly serving Chesterfield, Darlington, Dillon, Florence,

Marion, and Marlboro Counties

                      CAMPAIGN FOR DISASTER RELIEF

The cost of providing disaster relief over the past year has rapidly outpaced contributions to the American Red Cross, depleting our Disaster Relief Fund. To replenish this fund, we have launched a nationwide campaign to raise an initial $100 million for the American
Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund.

The Red Cross has responded to an unusually high number of disasters this year. We helped the victims of the worst flooding in the central United States in 15 years, a record number of tornadoes, an early wildfire season and an active hurricane season including Dolly, Fay, Gustav, Hanna and Ike.

Now, the Red Cross needs your help. Please support the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund, which enables us to provide shelter, food, counseling and other assistance to disaster victims, whenever and wherever they need us.

Donate now by visiting redcross.org or calling 1-800 REDCROSS(1-800-733-2767).

You can help the victims of thousands of disasters across the country each year, disasters like the Hurricanes of 2008, by making a financial gift to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund, which enables the Red Cross to provide shelter, food, counseling and other assistance
to victims of disaster.

The American Red Cross honors donor intent. If you wish to designate your donation to a specific disaster please do so at the time of your donation.
